Are You Prepared To Give Birkenstocks Another Go?

When I first met Heather in college, I remember her exact outfit. She was wearing a white tank top with a turquoise necklace, long skirt, black Prada backpack, and Birkenstocks.  People always associate Birkenstocks with hippies, but hippies, I thought, don’t wear Prada! Or do they?

Vogue recently put out an article about the Birkenstock and how girls around the office have fallen for these “pretty ugly shoes.”  So the question is: are Birks Back? Has Phoebe Philo made it okay to wear them again? At the Celine Spring 2013 show, Phoebe Philo (who does no wrong) had models walk down the runway in cozy fur-lined updated versions of Birkenstocks. These quirky shoes even made the Celine Ad campaign, where Daria Werbowy made them look effortlessly chic (but then again Daria makes everything look good).

After reading Vogue’s article and talking to Heather about her style choices in college, we came up with our answer. Be you. Create your own individual look with what you love and are comfortable in. As for me, I never owned a pair of Birkenstocks, but I think I might change that. Birks embody the perfect combo of weirdo and luxe. Especially if they are lined with mink! contributor Jane Herman Bishop shares with us some of her rules on how to wear Birks right and  got it down perfectly. She says ” A fresh pedicure is a must. She suggests metallic leather or polished patent styles over the traditional beige suede for a more elevated feel. And it helps to counterpoint the look with a tailored pant, or ladylike dress.”
